As a filthy casual, I'm ok with the aftermarket sticks that use methods other than the original to read their inputs. I think that realistically, the speedrunning community will probably have to settle as well. After all, the other sticks aren't unplayable; they just play different. In speedrunning I understand that that can make all the difference but it can also be overcome with practice and skill.

I beg to differ about the so-called drift immunity of the N64 joystick system, it most certainly isn't immune from drift, I used to own an N64 games console as well as a few of those N64 controllers and every single one of them suffered from drift, it was mainly due to the plastic gimbal and optical sensor system, the gimbal tended to wear out and become lose and floppy over time, and the plastic powder generated by the wear on the gimbal got into the optical sensors, one minute the character you're controlling in the game would be responding normally, and then suddenly it would go off in the wrong direction.

I love my holi edge 301 controller, it's a generic XBox type controller. It's really good, and charming. I kind of have an obsession with it, the grip is just like the Holi ps2 turbo dual shock controllers. I used to play on the Holi PS2 controller for like over a decade, like 15 years. I actively played PC games with it, I love it. It never drifted until the code started having a connection issue. It is really good. I love my controller so this video with those controller obsessed people made me realize how much it means for people. To have a genuine replicated stuff, unless it's about the regulation in speedruns. There is something so important about how it feels controlling the game with the very similar handling characteristics.

If someone is still routinely playing N64 for 10 hours a day In 2024 the sticks are probably not the problem.

Aluminum seems like a better choice than steel, just for the areas that have problems with wear. Everything else you keep high quality 3d printed. TPU probably.

This is what I learn from a couple of family members who used to work in game studios or making the product They used to tell me straight out that yes every video game out there every console every controller everything they made Will self-destruct at some point so they can make more money they could make it more better but then they won't be able to get more money out of you

First off let me just say a simple fact. Speed Runners are an annoying festering cancer. Second the N64s OEM controller stick is notorious for its frailty and failure rate. It's so bad that the MadCatz controller was the preferred controller for the console which says allot considering you would never be caught dead saying this about any other console ever! The stick is on par with the notoriety of the cartridge slot mechanism of the original NES if not bigger! They're is an extensive and highly in depth detail oriented amount of attempts to fix and/or replace this mechanism. From attempts to patch the OEM hardware, to replacing certain components only, to full on Frankensteining a way around it. In the end though any patches fixes and workarounds will be temporary at best. While many will sing praises to the N64 and it's all of seven noteworthy games all of which can be found on other consoles in their full glory, with the exception of Conqors bad fur day, I for one can't wait for the day the console becomes unplayable because the controllers no longer exist and the end of the inflamed irritable bowel Colon Cancer that is Speed Runners die out with it. Especially since they seem to think that it gives them some sort of special crown or bragging rights, guess what? It doesn't, now get back to scrubbing your gas station toilets and let the rest of us enjoy our hobby without your annoying asses butting in.
